Spatter is more than a cosmetic problem. It slows down production, wastes electrode material, and forces welders to spend extra hours grinding and cleaning.
1. Set the correct current
Amperage that is too high blasts molten metal out of the puddle. Follow the recommended range printed on the box and start at the lower end.
2. Hold a consistent arc length
An arc length of roughly one electrode diameter gives the smoothest transfer. Too long and the arc wanders; too short and it sticks.
3. Angle matters
A 10–15° drag angle in the direction of travel keeps molten slag behind the puddle, dramatically reducing spatter.
4. Use fresh, dry electrodes
Moisture in the flux boils out as hydrogen gas, the leading cause of spatter and porosity.
5. Clean the base metal
Paint, oil, rust, and mill scale all vaporise under the arc and blow molten metal around. Two minutes with a grinder saves twenty minutes of cleanup.
